I need a cheap 5.56 recipe.

I'd like to roll up about 2000 rounds of 5.56 or .223 and I want to do it on the cheap. Anybody have a good recipe for this?

Roll-up ?

I might be missing something here.......do you mean reload your own or buy outright ?

For AR-15s my favorite .223/5.56 load is one using Accurate 2015 powder (burns clean), Federal Small Rifle primers, IMI brass (if you can find any), and the bullet of your choice (55gr-75gr).

Good Luck.

That's crazy talk! You see the post above where somehow it is supposed to be a good deal to get 20 rounds for $8!

For something like 9mm, .45 ACP, or .223, I tend to buy components in bulk. As much bulk as I can afford anyway! You don't use Sierra match bullets in boxes of 50 for blasting ammo.

Step one, get a C&R FFL. Costs you $30 for three years. Then you can order stuff from Midway, Graf's, etc, for dealer cost. I'll just look up a few prices at Graf's for a quick example.

Right there on the front page of Graf's is PRVI FMJ. 100 bullets for $8.99. So that's five times as many bullets for nearly the same price. Primers cost me a bit over a buck for a hundred. Powder just flat out isn't an issue. One pound cans load a LOT of .223. It just doesn't take much powder! And I have ammo can after ammo can of brass. You can find .223 brass all over the place at just about any outdoor rifle range. Pick them up, peek inside to see that it is Boxer primed, take it home and tumble it. Ready to go!

20 rounds for $8 ? .... thats 40 cents a round !! $400 a thousand !!!!!

Assuming you have brass.... here are some prices from Midway...
primers.... $27/1000 or .027 cents each (CCI)
bullets..... $65/1000 or .065 cents each (Armscor 55 FMJ)
Powder.... $66/1000 or .066 cents each (24 gr of AA2230 or AA2460 @ $19/lb)

So this adds up to a roll your own cost of 15.8 cents a round or $158/1000 plus shipping if you order online. You should be able to match these prices locally. You will need about 3.5 lbs of powder per 1000 so Buying 8# of powder will lower the cost considerable. If you can find bulk milsurp powder (like WC846) you can save even more.

I recently found 500 Winchester .308 180grain silvertips for $40 at a flea market - thats a good bullet to use for several 30 cal loads and only 8 cents each!

Ramshot TAC or Exterminator is probably your best bet on powder, as the Ramshot pwoders are still cheaper than the others. you could try the usual sources for pulled .55 grain bullets, like Pat's Reloading, or gibrass.com
